Kudos to Gerald Ford, he was a great president..or so I hear. And I think it's wonderful that the flags have been lowered and the nation is in mourning for a great leader. I've got no beef with that. None at all.
BUT, I'm going to have to take a second out of my day to bash CBS.
Dear CBS,
I've heard that you guys run good television programming. I remember growing up in my house and having three television stations to choose from and I always picked you guys because you had that neat little peacock as your logo. Oh wait, is that NBC? Anyway, I don't have a cable subscription any more. Nonetheless, I made the trek across town to a friends house this afternoon to watch my beloved Missouri Tigers take on the Beavers from Oregon State in the Sun Bowl...which was to be televised live on your television station. Two friends and I stopped at Sonic on the way to the house, and then at the beer store, and WALA, we were set to go. Food, beer, and football. What could be better?
Upon getting to the house, it was locked and all of it's residents were out of town. So we picked the lock to the garage door and then unscrewed the door handle that lead to the house, all the while longing for a cold beer and watching our SuperSonic Breakfast Burritos get cold. ALL OF THIS TO WATCH YOUR TELEVISION STATION. We did all this for you CBS. And your peacock. Or is that FOX's peacock?
And we sit down, and we eat, and we talk like men talk when watching college football. And we're enthralled because the game is a GREAT GAME. What more could you ask for? A high scoring shootout through the first quarter, a terrible no-call on the 1-yard line that lead to a touchdown, and a Top 25 team getting upset through the middle of a second quarter. We were talking, and we were excited. IT WAS BOWL SEASON BABY!!!
AND THEN....
You fools at CBS decide to cut to a "breaking news story." Which happened to be coverage of a dead guy getting buried. Let's see: a great college football game or footage of a funeral? Of course, you'd be crazy to think we'd rather watch football. Your "breaking news story," which was "breaking" two days ago, has pretty much ruined my day. I'd been planning on watching this game on YOUR STATION for about three weeks now. If you want to show a funeral procession instead of football, it would be kind and EXPECTED of you to let your viewers know ahead of time. It's not like this wasn't planned.
Thanks for your time. As soon as this game is over, I'm never watching your station again....
until there's another game I want to see.
But if you ever cut to a dead guy getting buried during a great college football game again, it's over between you and I. And I mean it.
Sincerely,
David J. Unterreiner
*This is no way a beef on President Ford. Honestly, I know nothing about him. I presume he was a great man who deserves to be mourned. But I hate CBS.
*Missouri just got screwed again at the start of the second half. First a blown fumble call on the 1 yard line that led to a touchdown and now a blown call on the onside kick to begin the second half which led to another touchdown. THAT'S 14 UNWARRANTED POINTS.

Give Me Two Minutes
Your semi-weekly, but still quick witted two minutes of trade talkin, bowl ballin, puck handlin' dipsy doodle day!
*The Blues have won three straight under new coach Andy Murray. Lines have changed, units have changed, and goalies are playing good. Nashville tonight. Anybody else thinkin playoff push?
*Jeff Suppan took his bowl of soup north in the direction of central division rival Milwaukee. The Brew Crew and the Soup Express team up to make another strong run the first week of the season and then vanish into space the rest of the way. I guess for millions of dollars even good, admired athletes don't mind being losers. What do you guys think about this? I'm upset.
*The Tigers get set to run the Oregon State Beavers back into the ground (is that where beavers come from?). More coverage on this as the week goes by. That game is set for mid-afternoon on New Years Eve. Honestly, after about 54 days of rest, I don't think anybody can make an accurate prediction on this one. But I'll take Tigers 101, Beavers 0. And Ditka IS at the game.
*Whether its true or not, rumors are stating that Randy Johnson is on the trade block out of New York. If you remember years back, Johnson expressed much interest in coming to St. Louis. Early reports have Arizona interested, but you can bet that BIG Walt has his nose in this. Johnson does have a no-trade clause, so I can't see him going to a losing team considering his contract probably won't change. You guys want the BIG UNIT?
*Did anybody else watch FSN's replay of the World Series games? I sure did, and it was fun. And that game five pitching of Jeff Weavers really made me want him back in the Cardinal red. I'll take Mulder first, but I will have no problem settling with Weaver if need be. Mulder, Weaver, or Johnson - anything is better than having Braden Looper and Tyler Johnson filling out the back end of our rotation. Expect a move soon, I would think.
fun havin' ya!

All idiots....SHUTUP.
This isn't your weekly quick-witted two minutes of fun, this is a new section called "Shut the Hell Up." And we can change that name if you guys want, if you'd rather it be called "Shut the Heck Up." Or maybe just "Shutup." Or maybe "Please Be Quiet." Basically, it's a new blog that is going to allow me and you to get face-to-face with any athlete we want (no high school, please. They are still young kids who aren't making millions of dollars. Although they may be competitive at times, and you may not like the way they handle themselves on the court, they still have growing to do. And I'm sure how they compete doesn't necessarily shadow how they are off the fields and courts. So, with that in mind, college and professional only. If they're already making more money than they know what to do with, or if they are going to make more money than they know what to do with, then I feel like I have the right to tell them what I think.) So here comes the first episode:
I GOT IN A FIGHT WITH A CUBS FAN. No, not a fist fight. I'm a pacifist, Donny. But a fight, a verbal one. And to all you happy Cardinal fans out there, you're Christmas present from me is a victory. I tore this kid to pieces. His name was Bill. A Cubs fan named Bill didn't stand a chance against a guy like me. He was ugly also, looked like he fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. I'm telling you it was bad. He was saying stuff about how good Mark Prior and Kerry Wood are (WHAT?), and he told me that Derek Lee was a superior baseball player to Albert Pujols (WHAT?), and he mentioned the Lilly signing as one that would solidify their rotation (WHAT?). I mean, seriously, and in all honesty, I can't even give myself credit because he was being so stupid that I could've won talking with the cheeks that are on the backside of my body between my back and my legs. It just irritates me folks, it really does. I've got no problem with the Cubs, they suck. I don't see the point in wasting my time bashing the Cubs, they do their own bashing. But it's the Cubs fans that bother me, I mean they really get under my skin. Because every comment they make is so off-the-wall stupid that it drives you up-the-wall mad. It's worse than talking politics with someone ignorant and ornery. It's talking about baseball with someone both ornery and stupid. They have no frame of reference. They have no solid support. All they have is a bunch of losses and a crap-ton of money tied up in Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly. There's a lot of hope in Rich Hill. And Mark Prior and Kerry Wood probably won't stay healthy. Alfonso Soriano isn't going to play up to his potential, a) it's not a contract year, and won't be for another nine years. b) the Cubs will lose, and Soriano will have no motivation. Aramis Ramirez is, seriously, one of the worst defensive third basemen in the game. And Derek Lee just isn't as good Albert Pujols. The Cubs just aren't as good as the Cardinals. BUT....BUT....they may outplay the Pirates this year.
Brawls, Scrawls, and College Football: The NBA dished out BIG suspensions and hefty fines on Monday. CarMELO got the BIG of it all, and he deserved it. At first I thought fifteen games was over the top, but now I agree. He went freak nasty on a few balla's, and he needs some serious timeout. Sit in the corner, Melo. Stare at the wall and don't turn around until David Stern tells you to. Stern also said, "if players continue to behave like this, they won't be in my league long."
*I got kicked out of gymnastics once.
I love what David Stern is doing here. First he tells his players, "I'd appreciate it if you left your guns at home." Then he threatens to kick them out of his league for fighting. He's right, this is a PROFESSIONAL basketball league, and just like any other PROFESSIONAL job you don't expect your employees to shoot off guns at strip clubs or brawl in the office hallways. If they do, they get canned.
T.O. spit on D'Angelo Hall. Or maybe he didn't. He said he did and then he said he didn't.

Cubs Fans who can't back up your off-the-wall arguments with solid evidence. Ted Lilly has proved nothing, Derrek Lee has had one year that was even comparable to Albert's last six, Wood and Prior aren't even expected to be healthy: Shut the Hell Up.
Brawls, Scrawls, and College Football: The NBA dished out BIG suspensions and hefty fines on Monday. CarMELO got the BIG of it all, and he deserved it. To all hater's of David Stern. To everybody who says he isn't allowing his players to play. To all who thinks he has too many restrictions on the league. Do me a favor, think about whether or not you'd want that kind of stuff in your office if you were the boss. Not to mention if you were paying your gun-totting, fist-throwing, gangsta fightin' employees millions of dollars a year. And then: Shut the Hell Up.
T.O. spit on D'Angelo Hall. Or maybe he didn't. He said he did and then he said he didn't.
Terrell Owens: Shut the Hell Up.
Gilbert Arenas dropped 60 points right in Kobe Bryant's face the other night, then Kobe said "some of the shots he took were just terrible. He doesn't have a shooting conscience." This coming from Kobe, who takes the most and some of the worst shots in the history of basketball. Kobe's also known for never passing the ball.
Kobe Bryant: Shut the Hell Up.
Isiah Thomas was at George Karl's throat for the brawl the other night, saying that he thought the Nugget starters should have been on the bench at that point in the game. Karl responded by saying his team is young and still learning to hold leads, and noted that just two nights before he watched Utah blow a ten point lead to Sacramento with less than four minutes to go. He justified himself. Those guys are fine in my book. But then there is Steve Francis, who was hurt and didn't even play, nonetheless Stevie Franchise opens his mouth and says "the only reason George said those things is because he knows he doesn't have to come back here and play us this year. If he had to come back here and play us again this year, then he never would've said those things." Oh, ok. Let me tell you this, Stevzy, nobody in the NBA is scared of the Knicks. There are high school teams that could beat you guys. You have to be scary, or at least somewhat good, to claim that someone is scared of you. You're an idiot.
Steve Francis: Shut the Hell Up.
*Who wants to continue this "Shut the Hell Up" section? You let me know. Feel free to give your own "Shut the Hell Ups" on our post page (but don't go overboard. Please be considerate that this a public forum, and if you're old enough to be on it posting responses, then you're old enough to know what is over the line and what isn't.) Also be sure to let us know why you're sick of hearing from these multi-million dollar idiots, or else we'll have no option but to tell you: Shut the Hell Up. I'll take my favorite "Shut the Hell Up" from each week and post it in the blog. That's my Christmas gift to you. (That doesn't mean you're famous, I know, but come on... you like it.)
THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI vs. the university of illinois. TONIGHT. Live from St. Louis. The Illini are seven point BIG dogs coming out of Vegas, but they don't have Stephon Hannah. And they aren't runnin' forty minutes of satanic activity on the Tigers, like the Tigers are running on them. Go TIGERS!!! By the way, tickets are be scalped on the streets for about $1,000. In case you're interested. *Come back after the game for complete post-game coverage and analysis*

Same ole' Song and Dance?
Andy Murray took over for Mike Kitchen as the head coach of the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday morning. The question on Murray's head is whether or not he can straighten a rather distraught hockey team right now? His credentials check out, there's no doubt about that, and Blues President John Davidson says: "I believe he is the right person for the job."
Well, if there's one thing I've learned about coaches taking over in the middle of a season, it's that they usually AREN'T the right person for the job rather they're more of a safety net. However, Murray may be different. He brings over 25 years of coaching experience, both at the NHL and International level. He is the Los Angeles King's all-time leader in wins, at 215, and his King's teams have recorded 90 or more points three times. He became the second fastest coach to win 100 games in King's history, and maybe he'll step on the ball with the Blues as well. Murray is also the only coach in Team Canada Olympic history to coach the squad to two gold medals, 1997 and 2003. He most recently coached in the NHL with the now non-existant Winnipeg Jets from 1992-1995.
Murray takes over for Kitchen who, in all fairness, never had a legitimate shot at coaching the Blues. I really thought they would give him at least one more year, but I guess I was alone in that assessment. It seems a popular move in Blues Country. But keep in mind that Kitchen did have it rough, he had to deal with a team fire sale and a year without an owner. But hey, it's a "win and win now" sports society these days. And losers don't have a place.
In Murray's first game as coach, the Blues took it on the chin against the rival Blackhawks. The 'Hawks netted three third period goals to win 3-2. The Blues had goals from Christian Backman and Doug Weight.
The Bluenotes goes west towards the mountains and skate against the Colorado Avalanche and former Blues coach Joel Quennveille tonight. They look to improve on the league's worst record, and snap an 8 game losing straight. Their last win was a 3-2 shootout victory over Detroit on November 24th. They have one game in their last seven visits to Colorado.
Due to recent injuries in the Blue's net, Davidson announced the recall of twenty year old Marek Schwarz from Peoria. Schwarz was a first round pick (17the selection) in 2004 entry draft. In 12 games with the Riverman thus far in the season, he's 9-2-0 and has a .912 save percentage. He ranks fourth in AHL with a 2.28 goals agaisnt average. He splits time in Peoria with Jason Bacashihua, who has also been recalled and is minding for the Blues as starters Manny Legace and Curtis Sanford recover from their respective injuries. Schwarz started last night's loss against the Blackhawks, shuting the bad guys out through two periods.
In Other BluesNotes:
*The Blues first overall pick in the 2006 draft, Erick Johnson, has been selected to play on the 2007 National Junior Team.

What do the Birds on the Bats do now? I'll give you my witness...
What's better than sitting in front of your TV, drinking an ice cold Budweiser (inspired by Mike Shannon's pregame suggestion), and chanting: "MIGGY! MIGGY! MIGGY!"?
Alright, so maybe there is something a little bit better than chanting "MIGGY" at your TV screen, but nothing is better than watching baseball on the tube, listening to Shannon instead of FOX, and drinking ice cold frosty beverages.
*Unless you've got a girlfriend, then maybe you'd rather watch The Notebook, and drink decaffaineted coffee. But that's your preference. And I'm ok with that.*
Well, I guess I could make a few suggestions here about what I think the Cardinals are going to do now considering they lost out on the Schmidty and Gonzo sweepstakes, but I feel like I'll say something and then two days later somebody else will sign the person I mention and I'll get ripped by loyal readers for being an idiot, and another *bad word.*
I'm joking. Really. I love the responses, whether you think I'm a *bad word* or not. Thanks for reading.
UM, well, I think Miguel Batista is certainly in the running here for that coveted starting pitcher position, but don't forget about Jeff Weaver and Mark Mulder either. Right now, we've got Chris Carpenter, Kip Wells, Anthony Reyes, and Adam Wainwright. That's four starters, and YES Wainwright WILL start in the rotation. Four starters was enough 20 years ago, but it doesn't seem to fly these days. So, look at Batista, Weaver, Mulder, and (cough, cough) Jeff Suppan.
I don't know what the deal with Soup is: I think he's gone, but everyone around me seems to think that the Cardinals will have him back and BIG Walt is just playing around. Who knows? I'm not banking on it.
I'm not giving up on Dontrelle Willis though. Deal with it. BIG Walt is a genius.
Tell me what you think.
Here's mine:
Carp
Batista (who's our #2 starter? Oh Lordy, we're struggling!)
Wells (Is he even a #3?)
Wainwright
Reyes
Lord, thats rough. Looking at that rotation, I'm going to put ALL my faith in BIG Walt to get something done. And, like I said in an earlier post, you just never know what thats going to be.
HERE'S SOMETHING NEW:

Winter Meetings Speculation
Today, the St. Louis Cardinals posted on their website that they could be front runners for former Giants ace Jason Schmidt. Schmidt has made two serious pushes for the Cy Young award over the last five years, and he stands as one of the two major pitchers left on the market. Apparently, Schmidt has said that he wouldn't mind playing in St. Louis and that he would reconsider taking a smaller deal to get the opportunity. Although Schmidt isn't as shut-down as he was four years ago when he finished second in the Cy Young balloting, he is still a very considerable strikeout pitcher and would look pretty damn good in the two-slot behind Chris Carpenter.
This would a 1-2 punch that the Cardinals have lacked over the years, and it would certainly give the Cardinals the best top of the rotation in the central division.
Other Rumors out of Cardinal Camp:
*Does anybody know what the deal with Jeff Suppan is? One day he is close to coming back, and the next day he is as good as gone. I was a believer about a week ago, but it doesn't look so good anymore. It seems like the Cardinals have a much better shot with re-signing Jeff Weaver. I guess the question becomes whether or not Jason Schmidt affects the possibility of getting Suppan back, and I don't think it does. I'm pretty sure the Cardinals are going to do everything in their power to get Suppan at a descent deal, no matter who else is in the rotation.
*The Cardinals are also reportedly in talks with right-hander Miguel Batista, and bullpen fire-thrower Octavio Dotel. They've also met with the agent for Mark Mulder numerous times over the last two weeks.
*Supposedly, they are considering making Braden Looper a fifth starter as well, although this seems far-fetched. BIG Walt has seconded that rumor, however.
*How would Chris Carpenter, Jason Schmidt, Jeff Suppan, Mark Mulder, and Adam Wainwright look as our top five starters? Maybe we're closer than we think, but I doubt it.

GIVE ME THE DAMN BALL
You can consider this your weekly, quick-witted two minutes of hell raising FUN!!!
*Just when I about gave up hope, just when I was almost ready to give up, just in my final moments of life when I was ready to say: "Ok. FINE. Give Adam Wainwright the ball in the ninth. Let's give up on Izzy and move in a new direction." JUST THEN, Izzy comes out in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and says: "I AM SICK OF OTHER PEOPLE DOING MY JOB." !!!!!!!
HE'S BACK BABY. Give him the damn ball. He said, "I fully expect to have the ball in my hands in the ninth inning of the first game." This means two things, Izzy is recovering much faster than expected, AND the Cardinals will 1-0 after game one. I can only hope it's against the Cubs.
BIG Walt seconds Izzy's opinion saying that if Izzy continues the pace he's on, then Wainwright will be moved to the starting rotation prior to the season.
It's good to have our closer back isn't it?
*The Cardinals inked Chris Carpenter to a new deal today, a five year 65 million dollar deal, with a club option for an additional year that could make Carp a 77 million dollar man. Is he worth five more years at this price? Who knows, but it is certainly worth it to sign him. If Carp would have had one more great year like his previous two, then tested the market, he would have been paid at record clip. It's the little things that nobody expects that make BIG Walt the genius that he is.
*Rams' football. I told you two weeks ago to not give up and keep watching. Sorry that I made you sit through that Sunday game. You can blast me if you want. They were bad.
*The MU Tigers pigskin squad goes to the Sun Bowl. It's nice to finally move up from Shreveport's Independence Bowl, ain't it? Go Tigers.
*I'm Two Minutes late for class.
Give me the damn ball.

How about this Bowl of Soup
The Cardinals offered arbitration to two players earlier today, Jeff Suppan and Mark Mulder. This doesn't mean everything that it use to, but you can still expect Mulder to possibly accept it. Jeff Suppan, however, is another story. Soup is entertaining offers that involve four years, and ten million a year. However, the exciting news is that today he mentioned how much he would love to come back and play for the Cardinals. Other sources have mentioned that Suppan's plan is simply to run the market wild, but he plans on returning to the Cardinals in the end.
If either player accepts the arbitration offer, then they are considered signed for the 2007 season. The benefit for the Cardinals is draft-pick compensation, and both pitchers are in the market as BIG time pitchers, so if either one of them signs with another team then the Cardinals would get an additional first round pick as well as a mid-round pick. Don't ask me how it works, it just works that way.
I'll take either one of them, what about you?

Welcome To Hell.
MU Hoops head coach Mike Anderson has brought his Arkansas background into the great, snowy state of Missouri, and along with him came the notorious "forty minutes of hell." Although, after watching the boys treat the Arkansas Hogbacks like the ESPN and Fox networks treat the Cardinals in the midst of a World Series run, with no respect, my buddy Jeff made his own assessment on the Tigers thus far: "forty minutes of hell? More like forty minutes of Armageddon."
That's the truth, folks, MU Hoops looks like a fun team to watch this season, instead of the same ole strung out boys that played with Coach Snyder for the last six years. This team seems like they're real to me, and everybody who's an avid reader of my blogs knows that I don't hop on MU bandwagons that often. Most of the time they make me sick, but I can handle this wagon. I'm on.
With sharpshooter Matt Lawrence, who never got a true shot under Coach Q, hitting treys at a .538 clip, junior college transfer Stefhon Hannah gettin' 14.3 a game, and big boy Kalen Grimes going for 11 a game (which isn't really that impressive. Plus, Grimes has been accussed of stealing numbers of DVD's from me at a house party two years ago. I still haven't forgiven him. Among the DVDs were John Mayer: Live at Any Given Thursday, Boondock Saints, Usual Suspects, Reservoir Dogs and more). (But all this is irrelevant considering Lineas Kleize stole my girlfriend freshman year. You can now understand why I don't usually enjoy MU Hoops.)
But all that aside, it's about defense this year. And the D' Squad has been stealing games all season. And you can say exactly what I was saying about two weeks ago - "5-0, 6-0, 7-0? Big Deal, they haven't played anybody." True, but they never play anybody this early in the year, and they are usually about 5-3 at this time, instead of 8-0.
So get excited, I guess. But keep an eye out for the rankings. If Missouri cracks the Top 25 in the coming weeks we will begin our weekly series: "Does the Missouri Sports Top 25 Curse exist?"
Every time they get there, no matter if it's basketball or football, it usually means they perform an immediate collapse. And armageddon ensues.
Or maybe Mike Anderson has different plans this season?

Winter Meetings coming, Mulder going???
There is only one thing to be sure of once the winter meetings begin next week: whatever the Cardinals do, you won't know about it until its done. Cards GM Walt Jocketty is notorious for not giving up any information that would lead to speculation concerning free agent signings, or trades. All we can do as humble fans is sit around and wait, or give things our best guess.
The rumors are the Cardinals are looking for two starting arms this week, and that neither one of them are expected to be big arms that are going to be asking for a lot of money. I don't really have the slightest clue as to what BIG Walt has in mind, nobody ever really does. But don't get your hopes up for Barry Zito, it could happen but I wouldn't put money on it.
Jocketty was quoted earlier today saying that as of right now the starting rotation is Carpenter, Wells, and Reyes. He didn't mention Wainwright, so maybe Adam will be in the bullpen to start things off after all. I would think that you'll see either Suppan or Weaver signed this week by the Cardinals, along with another small market pitcher. Jocketty has expressed more interest in resigning either Suppan or Weaver before going out and taking a risk on someone he's not used to.
The rumors lead to Mark Mulder possibly heading to Arizona. He lives in Phoenix, so this could be a good situation for him. I never thought it would be as easy as many people thought to resign him, and I never thought teams would back off because of his poor season either. Looks like he may be gone, and I don't think the Cardinals will spend as much money on him as other teams will be willing to. Mulder wants the money in his pocket, I don't blame him. But I will be extremely happy to have him back.
We'll stay tuned this week and see how things go. Keep your fingers crossed and your ears open and be ready for Walt's next miracle move.
How about those Missouri Tigers? The hoop squad is stringing a run together, and maybe possibly hopefully this new coach thing is working out. We'll delve into the hoops season later this week.
