SEMO-Murray takes Big Stage

Not 24 hours after my anti-Sports TV rant, I notice that SEMO and Murray State take center stage on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. next Saturday. Now that's tempting.

And won't it make a few loyal readers happy to know that now I sit here, such a short time later, and ponder whether or not I go back on my daring dialect of the night prior and get my back of chips and soda ready?

If I do, then I open myself up for the violent "hypocrite" chants. And, being that I'm already known as a bandwagon fan who doesn't like sports, I'd hate to have the hypocrite title on my watch as well. It wouldn't look good for me and could cast a shadow on my blossoming blogging career.

I've yet to see Semo play this season. The prospect is tempting. It's not like I renounced all my possessions and moved to Nepal, you know? All I said is that I don't miss watching sports on TV. I suggested walking around the woods as a substitute. So it's ok for me to peak at the TV from time to time, right? That doesn't make me a terrible person, does it?

Should I do it? Or not? Should I watch a SEMO team, that hasn't knowingly cheated since the Ron Shumate-era, put a serious ass-whoopin on Murray State? Or should I just read about it on the AP wire?

You tell me. Are they worth the watch at the risk of my ego and character marching to the forefront and taking the bullets for my sports soft side?

Will SEMO fans ever forgive me for ostracising television the week prior to SEMO's big time ESPN2 matchup with OVC rival and bitter enemy Murray State?

Or can they trust that SEMO tickets as a gift for my first first reconciliation is still the best gift I've ever received? Can they trust that my heart broke when I saw, from the very top row of a packed Show-Me-Center, Aubrey Reese float one over Bud Eley's hand and into the bottom of the net for a Murray State buzzer beater? Can they trust that when my dad introduced me to Luther Bond, and I got the honor of shaking the big guy's hand, I didn't wash my hands for two weeks? Can they trust that I still hear the echo's of "threeeeeeeee point basket by #3 Cuuurtis SHELLtonnn." Can they trust that I still bleed red blood?

Or is all hope lost? What should I do? Watch or no?

You'd be a fool to miss such a game.

You just had a temporary moment of sports induced insanity. It's ok, go ahead and watch SEMO. We all go through these periods at some time in our life. For instance I was going to boycott all BCS games this year but just had to watch Mizzou (and actually a few others). The best example of this, probably occurred when you were quite young. Major league baseball players went on strike and the season was eventually cancelled. Not a game or two, but the entire SEASON!! Fans across the country went nuts. If I heard it once I heard it a thousand times, "I will never go to another game as long as I live". Last I heard there was one guy in South Boston that stuck with that pledge and has not been back. All of the rest of them are now complaining about steroids and cheating as they swig their 6 dollar beer from their 75 dollar seat. It's just the way sports work. It's either in you or it is not. If it is, you occasionally rant about all that is bad but you never really go away. Any good solid sports fan that read your blog recognizes what you are going through but knew full well that you didn't really mean it. It's just the way it is!

If you've ever watched Tennessee Tech play you would have seen that Coach Sutton DOES use his condition to get away with things that other coaches can't and he does it often! I've even seen him bump an official with his walker. If any other coach did anything remotely like that he would be ejected. Why is it classless to point out something a handicapped person did wrong? Just because they're handicapped doesn't give them the right to break the rules.

And.. just because people are handicapped doesnt give them a free pass to do whatever they want either. Come on now, it was a classless comment. And I cant wait for the day Erik Sean to tell Ronny to shut his mouth, because everything that comes out of it is either A) obvious, or B) stupid.

Why was it a classless comment? First you agreed that because someone is handicapped that doesn't give them a free pass to do whatever they want then you turn around and accuse Hines of a classless comment simply because the person he was commenting on has an handicap. Coach Sutton deliberately breaks the rules because he knows his handicap allows him to. Now that is what's truly classless. I applaud Ron Hines for not falling victim to political correctness and pointing it out!

First off, it was sarcams. Sorry, I will be more deliberately obvious next time for you. Well, we all have our opinions. It was a rude comment, bottom line. It shouldnt have been said. It was an embarrassing comment.

I guess some of us fall for the P.C. B.S. and some of us don't. Coach Sutton's antics are embarrassing to both the coaching and handicapped community. Once again, kudos to Ron Hines for having the courage to speak up!

You must be Ron himself because everyone I have talked to agrees with me. Im sorry. And I dont know what P.C. means.

I didn't hear it, but if Ron Hines DID say that, I'd agree that it was not necessary and highly inappropriate. I don't like Sutton, so I'm not defending him. I just think K103 or whoever needs to make sure Hines doesn't slide on this one. I like Hines alot but those kind of comments are too much, especially when they're directed at someone who almost died from his disease. I agree that Sutton gets away with stuff alot bc of his illness, which I also think is crap. He's a crybaby.

P.C. = Politically Correct. You're giving the man a pass on behavior that other coaches would be given technical fouls and even suspensions for because of his condition. I never said I didn't admire him for overcoming adversity to return to coaching but now he's just milking it for special treatment and you're buying it hook, line and sinker. But we've both stated our opinion. What does everyone else think? I've seen Coach Sutton do exactly the things Ron Hines was complaining about in this broadcast have never heard Ron Hines say anything on the radio that would lead me to think he was a liar so let's assume for the sake of the argument that Coach Sutton was getting away with something. Was Ron Hines wrong for pointing it out?

What Hines said was wrong. It might be true that Sutton gets away with some stuff, but you don' take cheap shots at him across the radio. If Hines really needed to vent, then hang up the mic and take a few minutes off before he gets back on the air and disgraces himself and K103.

I don't know what he said but now I'm curious. It must have been bad.

This isn't the first time Hines has made inappropriate comments on-air. Remember the comments about the SLU kid being a Canadian Jew? I don't think anyone at SEMO cares what he says, as long as it keeps him out of the office.

Hines really didn't say anything out of line, that's why I don't understand why some people are so bent out of shape. He was just pointing out that Sutton wouldn't go back in the coaching box when told to by an official and was all up in the officials face to the point where any other coach would have gotten a T. Maybe he did go on about it a bit much but he was just pointing out Sutton's actions, not bad mouthing him.

He did point out that Sutton was getting out of control, there is no argument there. The problem is he blamed the lack of a penalty on his disabilities. That is wrong, bottom line, and disrespectful to Coach Sutton and the reffing crew that night.

Since when did OVC officials deserve any respect? That are the flat out worst officiating crew in the nation.

So Mr Anonymous, why did Sutton not get a technical foul if it wasn't because of his condition? Like I said before I've seen him actually bump an official with his walker and not get a technical. If ANY other coach did that he would be ejected and probably suspended for a few games. If pointing out someone breaking the rules is being "disrespectful" then I guess I'm just a disrespecting type of guy. Respect is earned by your actions, not bestowed upon you by your condition.

This is the last post I'll make on this subject since some of you either have some kind of personal problem with Ron Hines or just can't see past your P.C. blinders.

The only thing I believe people have a problem with is the fact that Mr. Hines points out degrating things about other people in an attempt to make an excuse. Obviously you are the ONLY one on this blog who sees what Ron said was justified and the right thing to say, and if that doesnt open your eyes, then you need help.

There were so many things wrong with that statement that I had to make just one more comment.

First, comments from four people are nowhere near enough of a sample to start claiming a majority.

Second, just because you're in the minority doesn't mean you're wrong. In 1776 seventy percent of colonists were against breaking ties with Great Britain. By your logic then The Declaration Of Independence, Revolutionary War and creation of the United States Of America was wrong! You are the one who needs help in opening your mind up and thinking rather than having knee-jerk emotional reactions to everything.
