***Rumor has it that St. Louis may just be in the market for an MLS team. This is good, because I think I went to high school with a few dudes who think they're good enough to play for an MLS team. Apparently, Jeff Cooper, some lawyer from Alton, is trying to strike a deal with Real Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts (also owner of the Blues) that would land the Utah based team here. Who knows? Professional soccer in St. Louis might actually work. There was only a few cocky kids at my high school who thought they could play, but what about all those St. Louis high schools? Now, those kids KNEW they could play MLS, but then I got to college and I hear all them talk about how their whole team was doing coke and smokin pot with the tie-die kids. Whats up with that?
***The MU hoops squad lost to the Bob (T)Huggins K-State team last night, 80-73. I ran into Marshall Brown in a men's bathroom in Gywnn Hall about two hours ago. I just stared at him in disgust. I'm starting to get embarrassed again. When do I graduate? And, at that point, am I required by proper Alumni code to cheer for the Tigers, or can I pick another college - like Wisconsin?
***Jeff Gordon wrote a great article breaking down the St. Louis Cardinals salary situation while asking the question "is the club being prudent or merely cheap?" Here's the link: http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/columnists.nsf/jeffgordon/story/E35A748CF42A153C862572730076A33F?OpenDocument
***And in getting back to the Jeff Weaver topic, Dan O'Neill asks this question today in the St. Louis Post: "If one team is stupid, does this mean all teams are obligated to be stupid?" Or is that just Scott Boras' sentiment?
***Another great column written by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post breaking down the Cardinals top 100 prospects, in order from 1-100: http://www.stltoday.com/blogs/sports-bird-land/2007/01/baseball-america-cardinals-top-30-prospects/
***Quips from sportswriters country wide:
Steve Rosenbloom, ChicagoSports.com: “Tank Johnson says he’s just a normal guy. You know, the way most people are normal with six guns, more than 500 rounds of ammo and a bunch of pit bulls around two kids under 3, not to mention a now-dead felon best friend.”
Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “The NHL All-Star Game drew a 0.7 national Nielsen rating. It would have been 0.8, but at the last minute I switched to the channel that has that continuous piercing beep and a test-pattern.”
Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel: “Can we quit with all this mindless debate about how having a child might distract Tiger Woods’ march toward Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors? What, do you think Tiger’s going to be changing diapers, driving the child to day-care and parking the baby stroller beside the driving range while he hits balls? For crying out loud, the child will have her/his own nanny, nutritionist, chauffeur, PR agent and swing coach by age 2. I’m just wondering whether Nike will make the kid wear a swoosh bib.”
Scott Ostler, San Francisco Chronicle: “The Raiders’ new guy says he’s going to buy Black Hole tickets for his wife and his two children, a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old. Sure, and maybe Pop can add to the family’s game-day experience by letting the kids skateboard to the Coliseum on the freeway.”
O yea, and Roger Clemens said this:
“You put your body through a lot of punishment and then you come up one game short, like we did last year, for me it was a waste of time. When you don’t have the opportunity to go to the playoffs and have a chance to win, it’s a waste of time for me. At this stage and point in my life and career, that’s all you’re looking for.”
*Which must be why he's thinking about taking a contract with the Boston Red Sox that stipulates he only be with the club on the days he pitches, which would never include a weekend, so that he can be with his family and still get paid $13 million over the course of the season. $13 million for three days work over a two week period? It's all about winning, Roger. Shut the Hell Up. Retire. And vanish.
You guys hate horses.

Hey Dave, its me again. I didnt know Jeff Gordon could race cars, and write for a major newspaper. Wisconsin is a good fit for anyone, great cheese, Packers, umm, cheese...
The great state of Wisconsin will not apologize for their cheese.
And Lindsey will throw a witness to that.
I've been waching ESPN lately and everything is an opinion. Sportswriters, broadcasters, announcers, it doesnt matter everyone has their won ideas. I appreciate all views of situations, but really I just want to hear the facts about a game, or if a coach retires, I just want them to say that he retired, not ask if he will be back and if he is leaving too soon. Just report the facts, and leave the guessing and opinions to the viewers. On any given night, they might show 6 different games around the country, and spend the next 45 minutes talking about Shaq's toe, or if Cav's can win without LeBron, we dont know thats why we play. Agree? More sports, less gossip. Lets leave that to Joan and Mellisa.
So you want to bail on Mizzou during a down year, while you continually bash St.Louis fans in your blogs for being fair-weather? Sounds like you are pretty quick to jump ship too.
If you've followed my blogs from the beginning, you would know that I'm not a Mizzou fan. I've made it a solid point to express my disgust with their athletic program, with their athletes, with their athletic director, and with their coaches. The only time I've ever mentioned being on their bandwagon was to set up a joke the following line about how, by getting on their bandwagon, I would be let down, embarrassed, and sick to my stomach for getting on it in the first place.
I don't like Mizzou sports. I haven't since the day I've been here. The majority of the athletes are cocky, disrespectful, and ignorant.
I do root for them to win occassionally (against KU and Illinois to name a few), but I don't consider myself a fan. I could care less if they lose. All I do is report their progress and their scores.
However, I was talking with a friend just the other night about whether or not he thought we would become MU fans once we left the school and didn't have to be around the cocky, unprofessional atmosphere the program gives off here? We decided that the answer was "yes, sure, we will." So, maybe next year I'll go back to being an MU fan like I was when I was a kid listening to games with Dad and hearing Jason Sutherland and the Haley Twins drop bombs on KU, or Corby Jones straight hammerin' touchdowns. But, to answer your statement, I haven't been a fan in four years. I've never been sad or happy about a win or a loss. It's kind of disappointing, to be honest. I wish it wasn't that way.
I look forward to getting back to the days when the football team plays Nebraska and the game runs into five o'clock service at St. Vincents and Dad and I sneak out to the van after eucharist to listen to the final moments of the game. Disappointing ending that game as well.
So, I guess you could say I jumped off the wagon about four years ago. And haven't been on it since.
Why don't you guys get all up in arms when I accuse you of being fairweather St. Louis fans like I just did when you accussed me of being a fairweather Missouri fan?
This is America, this is a blogspot, you have a voice. Let me hear why you aren't a bandwagon St. Louis fan, or I'm just gonna keep believin what I believe. Somebody convince us, please.
Im gonna throw in my voice about being a Cards fan. I dont know haw many times my dad told me the story about when I was born he was in and out of the hospital room watching bits and pieces of the Cards in the World Series. Ive been raised on dad talking about Brock, Musial, Schoendienst, Gibby, and other greats. i remember faintly going to games at the old Busch when Todd Stottlemyre, McGee, Gaetti, Ozzie and company were playin in the mid 90s. Ever since then, its almost been a part of me, as corny as that sounds. Im not a bandwagon sports fan. I love the Packers, yes the Packer. Yes 4-12, 8-8. Not good, but damn I was still a fan. Im not into being a fan bacause of success.
-Amen.
I have never seen a person say one thing and then contradict themselves again later in all my life. You do more flip-flopping than anything.
I'll work on that. Thanks for the advice, yo.
Dave, you love St. Louis and hate MU. This has been clear since day 1. Witness?
I do recall a happy moment tearing down goal posts your freshmen year.
A spy? Damn, you got me. You're right. I remember almost dying that day, in the midst of that crowd thinking I was going to get stampeded and never get to say bye to my mom. Numerous times I lost my friends in that pile of hooligans, it was scary.
The 'Skers fall into that KU/Illinois category. I hate corn. Soft spot in my heart for upsets, trick plays, Brad Smith, keg stands with devasting ends, beer drinking out of dirty boots, Harpo's/goalposts/hacksaws, Gary Pinkel when he's not an idiot, a police force that can't handle a body of students when the body of students won't accept being handled...ya know, stuff like that.
Not that any of that had anything to do with that particular day.
I do own a limited edition, illegal poster of those goal posts coming down. I'll bribe you with it. You get the poster, but you have to stop bashing me on these posts. I'm red, blushing, and embarrassed. You're scaring away fellow bloggers. Deal?
hey I was reading the Gordon article and I was just wondering how long do you have to play to get arbitration in the big leagues?
I wouldn't say that you love St. Louis.
I wouldn't say that you love St. Louis.
